10:00 am – 11:00 am

Northfield Arts Guild

Center for the Arts

304 Division St
Northfield, MN 55057

This class is held on Wednesdays and meets twice a month.

Description: The Youth Music classes are companion classes to the Youth Visual Arts classes and provide complementary content in the performing arts.

The Homeschool Music class will explore the world of music from many angles. Music appreciation will introduce music from all over the globe, with special attention to India, the early Mediterranean cultures, and China, in parallel with the art class. Playing percussion, singing, and learning the recorder will introduce and improve the basic techniques of music, while studying music theory will further musical knowledge and understanding.

Children do not need to come prepared with prior knowledge, but investigation beforehand is encouraged to help facilitate discussions.

Music & Dance Instructor: Kate Stuart began teaching music at the age of 17, dance a few years later, and hasn’t stopped since. After earning a B.Mus. and M.A., she pursued further graduate studies in music and dance while choreographing ten years of Madrigal Dinners at two universities, dancing at the Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival, and teaching at St. Olaf College. Recently she has been teaching at the Northfield Arts Guild and Northfield Senior Center, sharing folkdance at the annual SCSC Young Artist Conference, and offering music and dance classes for fellow homeschool families.

Target age range: Classes are designed for youth ages 6–12 years
All abilities are welcome; if your child needs accommodations, please discuss these with the instructor prior to the beginning of the class so that Northfield Arts Guild can make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations.

Cost per child/student: $24 ($21.60/Northfield Arts Guild members), includes materials

Registration: Register online at or call 507-645-8877 during office hours, or stop by the office and register in person.

Parent/guardian/educator policy: Parents are not required to remain in the building during the classes, but parents may stay and watch as Northfield Arts Guild knows this is an important part of being able to continue the conversation and learning after your arts lessons. Alternatively, a waiting lounge is located on the downstairs level directly adjacent to the art studio where the homeschool classes take place. The lounge is a work in progress, so feel free to offer suggestions on how the space might be improved.
Sibling policy: Northfield Arts Guild ask for a $5 materials fee per younger sibling who wishes to play and experiment with the materials (if age appropriate). Or consider the Music Together preschool program that happens during the same time. Or they may play and rest in the waiting lounge or observe the class.
