Gym and Swim

Tuesday, February 27, 2018Tuesday, April 10, 2018 (7 weeks)
1:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Description: Participants will spend time playing various gym games as well as time in the pool learning basic swimming technique.

A co-ed physical education program designed to provide homeschool students an opportunity to strengthen their motor skills in a safe and fun environment. The goal of the program is to help each student understand the importance of good health, fair play and teamwork. Because every child learns and develops at different levels, YMCA coaches adapt the structured activities to meet each child’s needs.

Students participate in 50 minutes of swimming instruction and 50 minutes of gym activities. Everyone should bring a swimsuit and towel, gym shoes and a water bottle.

Gym activities include fitness testing, rock climbing, floor hockey, dodge ball, soccer, and yoga.

Pool activities include pool rules, pool safety, breath holding, back float, diving skills, being confident in the water, following directions and accepting constructive criticism.

Target age range: for ages 5–8 years

Cost per child/student: $68 ($52/YMCA member)
Early bird discount: receive a 10% discount ($61.20 or $46.80/YMCA members) by registering by the Monday two weeks prior to the start of the session

Registration: Homeschool Adventures members can find the registration form PDF in the HSAdventures Yahoo Group attachments folder. Or register in person at the Y, or contact Samantha Axelson at 952-897-9004 or samantha.axelson(at)ymcamn.org for registration materials, or register online.

Parent/guardian/educator policy: A parent must come into the building and sign each child in and out every day. Students are not allowed to do this for themselves.

To minimize interruptions, parents are asked to ensure that all participants visit the restroom before the beginning of class.

On the first day of class there will be multiple forms for each family to complete and a short meeting for both participants and parents for announcements and daily specifics. Families are asked to arrive five minutes early to allow enough time for this.

Starting with the second week of classes, students will start in the gym and then transition to the pool. Students should come dressed in their swimsuits under their gym clothes. Parents will meet their children at the family locker rooms after class to assist them with getting dried off and changed into street clothes.

Sibling policy: Free Kids Stuff drop-off child care for siblings ages 6 weeks to 10 years old for up to 2 hours per day. Parents must remain in the building while child is in the Kids Stuff area. Your child will enjoy safe, fun, structured, age-appropriate activities including story time, arts & crafts, outdoor playtime and gym time. No reservations required. No additional cost.
