Homeschool workshop

Minnesota Orchestra offers a homeschool workshop at Orchestra Hall several weeks prior to most Young People’s Concerts. Material and activities are presented by a licensed teacher and include a mix of information about the hall, what to expect on the field trip, and what to listen for during the concert. Workshops are participatory, interactive and free of charge for registered concert attendees.

Minnesota Orchestra
Roderick Cox, conductor

In this exciting interactive concert, musicians help students investigate the musical element “timbre,” or “tone color,” and the four families of instruments.

Each musical family gets a chance to shine as the Orchestra performs lively excerpts from Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Bernstein’s West Side Story and more.

There’s also a special treat—an impressive performance by a dynamic young competition winner, cellist Nygel Witherspoon, performing the gorgeous first movement of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto.

Minnesota Orchestra Young People’s Concerts are an outstanding arts experience that is both educational and engaging. Each Young People’s Concert focuses on a specific musical element, composer, time period or theme, that is supported by free online preparation materials and multi-disciplinary performance elements.
