The current museum will close on December 31, 2016. The new museum + planetarium is scheduled to open Summer 2018.

Explore world class dioramas featuring Minnesota wildlife and habitats, visit the Touch & See Discovery Room for hands-on learning with live animals and real specimens, and cruise through the cosmos in the ExploraDome theater.


Homeschool days

Unique events designed for homeschoolers. Participate in science activities that encourage your group to work together, ask questions, and make new discoveries.

  • Themed tour — including educational games and hands-on experiences
  • Science lab — utilize active learning environments and authentic objects and specimens
  • Planetarium show — an immersive presentation in our ExploraDome theater

Target age range: designed for homeschoolers ages 5–12 years

Cost per child/student: $10
Cost per adult/educator: free

Cancellation policy: Registrations are final. No refund given after registration is received, with exception of cancellation by the Bell Museum.

Severe weather policy: The Bell will cancel the program if either Minneapolis or Saint Paul Public schools announce a delayed start or cancelled classes by 8am on the date of the program. A full refund will be given if participants cannot make a rescheduled program date.

Sibling policy: Siblings ages 4 years and under are free but please note that activities are not geared towards this age level.
Parent/guardian/educator policy: One adult must be present for every five children.

Field trips

Memorable learning experiences are led by Bell Museum Interpretive Guides: experienced University of Minnesota students with enthusiasm for science.

Self-Guided Exploration: See the diorama halls, Touch & See Discovery Room and special exhibit gallery at your own pace.

Discovery Tour: Explore the diorama halls and participate in live animal programs in the Touch & See Discovery Room.

ExploraDome Plus: Participate in a 30-minute planetarium program, a 30-minute hands-on astronomy activity, and 30 minutes in the Touch & See Discovery Room.

ExploraDome Rental: Immerse your group in a private 45-minute planetarium program followed by a 15 minute Q&A with a Bell Museum educator.

Minimum group size: 15 students or fee equivalent
Maximum group size: Maximum of 90 students for Discovery Tour. Maximum of 60 students for Discovery Tour with ExploraDome. Maximum of 15 students plus 1 adult chaperone in the ExploraDome. Maximum of 75 students for Self-Guided Exploration.

Cost per child/student: from $4.50 for Self-Guided Exploration to $6.25 for ExploraDome Plus.
Cost per adult/educator: $5, 2 free adult admissions for every 10 students

Getting there

Parking information: Ample parking is usually available just one block or less from the museum at the 4th Street Ramp or Church Street Garage. Be aware that other University events can fill nearby lots, so be prepared to walk. 

Driving directions: The Bell Museum is located on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota at the southwest corner of 17th Ave/Church St and University Ave SE with easy access from either I-35W or I-94.
