Organization Library Cards

Homeschool families who reside in Hennepin County qualify for an Organization Library Card. Apply at http://www.hclib.org/pub/info/library_cards.cfm under the heading "Organizations and businesses located within Hennepin County." You must apply online; organization cards cannot be obtained at the library.

You may enter "Homeschool" for the Organization Name and "Home Educator" for your Position in Organization.

The advantages of an Organization Library Card are ...

  1. Checkout limit is 100 items by organization (compared to 30 for a pesonal card).
  2. An organization may request multiple cards, such as one for yourself, one for your spouse, and one for each child
  3. An organization has a single login for all card holders, making account management easier.

Disadvantages are ...

  1. Organization cards must be renewed yearly.
  2. Organization cards do not have remote access to databases, so you will still need to keep your personal "Hennepin County residents or property owners" library card to access those.
  3. You must have the physical card to check out items (if you've ever forgotten your personal card at home and had them look up your number at circulation, that won't happen for your Organization card).

Note: If you're a family of 4 or more, your family's combined personal card limit is 120 items or more. If the organization limit of 100 items is too low for your family, you may prefer managing multiple personal library cards, in which case you might find libraryelf.org useful ($20/year to manage multiple cards).
